How Pets Can Help Seniors Feel Less Alone

For many seniors, a pet can do so much for them emotionally and physically. Even a few minutes spent caring for a pet can bring some routine and companionship to the day.

As people get older, their social routines can change. They could retire or move away from their friends or even might lose a spouse. In some cases,  no longer being able to drive can mean fewer opportunities to see other people. Having a pet around doesn’t replace time with family and friends, but it can add some companionship to an otherwise quiet day.

    Pets Give Seniors Companionship

One of the simplest ways pets can help with loneliness is by simply providing another presence in the home. Seniors who live alone may go long periods without having someone to talk to or interact with. A pet gives them something to care for and spend time with throughout the day.

Pets can also encourage small moments of interaction. Pet interactions may seem small, but they’re part of having a daily routine that includes another living being. For seniors who enjoy animals, that companionship can make the home feel less quiet and provide something to look forward to during the day.

Caring for a Pet Can Create a Routine

Pets need regular care, and that can give structure to a senior’s day.

Depending on the type of pet, daily responsibilities can be:

    • Feeding and providing fresh water
    • Taking a dog outside or going for walks
    • Cleaning litter boxes or other living areas
    • Grooming
    • Playing and spending time together
    • Making sure the pet has regular veterinary care

Having these responsibilities can give a senior a reason to get up and move around, and even have the chance to follow a daily schedule.

    Dogs Can Encourage Movement

Dogs, in particular, can encourage seniors to spend more time moving around. A short walk outside can provide exercise as well as a change of scenery. Walking a dog may also create opportunities for social interaction. Seeing the same neighbors or other dog owners during a walk can lead to familiar faces and casual conversations. Of course, a senior’s ability to care for a pet should always be considered. A large or energetic dog may need more physical work than someone can comfortably manage. A smaller pet may be easier for another senior to care for.

Pets Can Give Seniors Something to Look Forward To

Having a pet means there is always another small responsibility waiting at home. A senior may even look forward to feeding their pet in the morning or sitting together in the evening. Those simple activities can break up long stretches of time spent alone.

Pets can also provide comfort during difficult days. While they can’t replace conversations with loved ones or professional support, their presence can help make an empty house feel a little less empty.

For seniors who have experienced major changes in their lives, keeping some familiar routines can also be important. A pet may be one of the things that stays consistent even when other parts of life have changed.

    Pets Don’t Replace Human Companionship

It’s important to remember that a pet can’t meet every social or care need a senior may have. Someone may enjoy having a dog or cat at home but still need regular visits from their family and their friends. Seniors who have difficulty getting around may also need help with errands, appointments, meals, or other daily activities that aren’t related to caring for their pet. In-home care Pocatello can provide another source of regular interaction while allowing a senior to remain in their home.

Choosing a Pet That Fits a Senior’s Lifestyle

Before bringing a pet into the home, it’s important to think about what the senior can realistically manage.

    Consider their:

    • Mobility: Can they safely walk, feed, groom, and clean up after the animal?
    • Energy level: Would a high-energy dog be difficult to manage?
    • Housing: Does their home or living community allow pets?
    • Cost: Can they manage food, supplies, grooming, and veterinary expenses?
    • Future care: Who could care for the pet if the senior becomes unable to do so?

Some seniors may already have a beloved pet and simply need occasional help caring for it. Others may decide that a pet isn’t practical for their current situation. There are also ways to spend time with animals without owning one, like visiting friends with pets or volunteering with animals when possible. The goal is to find an arrangement that works for both the senior and the animal.

A Little Companionship Can Make a Difference

Pets can bring things like companionship, routine, movement, and plenty of small moments of connection into a senior’s day. For someone who enjoys animals, having a pet nearby can be a meaningful part of life at home. At the same time, seniors may need other types of support as their needs change. Family members, friends, and in-home caregivers can all play a role in helping seniors stay active and connected!
